COSTA RICAN PSYCHIATRIST and PSYCHOTHERAPY
Like the US, a Costa Rican psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry and is certified in treating mental disorders. Many are a member of the Board of the Professional Association of Psychologists of Costa Rica.
Psychiatrists are trained in diagnostic evaluation and in psychotherapy. As part of their evaluation of the patient, psychiatrists are one of the few mental health professionals who may prescribe psychiatric medication, conduct physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests and electroencephalograms, and may order brain imaging studies such as computed tomography or computed axial tomography (CT/CAT Scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography scanning.
Costa Rica psychiatrists are also trained in the medical, psychological, and social components of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They help patients and their families cope with stress and crises. Psychiatrists often consult with primary care physicians and psychotherapists, such as psychologists and social workers.
