THE PEOPLE OF COSTA RICA
Ethnically writing, Costa Rica has one of the most uniformed populations in all of Latin America.
Close to ninety-five percent is mestizo (of mixed blood, generally Spanish with Native American) or of direct European descent and thus are considerably fair skinned. Afro-Caribbean natives represent approximately 2% of the population and are found on the Caribbean side of the country and were migrant labor in the 1870's to help construct a railroad that would run from San José down to the Atlantic coast near Limon.
The Costa Rican people are a friendly and outgoing group. They are extremely courteous and welcome just about types of foreigners with open arms [that is unless you are drunk] Obviously, the language is Spanish (Hello!) - however, English is taught in all of the primary schools. Unlike many other countries, the dividing of the line between rich and poor is thin. For this reason, the majority of Ticos are very happy. This lack of disparity in social status also serves to reduce the crime rate here.
