People with Type 2 diabetes now have an option that many renowned medical experts world-wide consider a sensational breakthrough against the disease: bariatric (weight loss) surgery.

The millions of Americans and Canadians – and people in Europe and elsewhere – who  suffer from Type 2 diabetes now have an option that many renowned medical experts world-wide consider a sensational breakthrough against the disease: bariatric (weight loss) surgery, performed right here in Costa Rica.

Bariatric surgery to cure T2D is relatively new; there is not much publicity about the procedure, and it is not wholly embraced everywhere. The huge pharmaceutical and medical supplies corporations, for obvious reasons, are very vocal in their opposition. However, as more results come in and more and more closely monitored studies are completed and published in the literature, medical opinion is gradually swinging in its favor. The American Diabetes Society and Diabetes UK, among others, are on record calling for bariatric surgery to be used as a treatment for T2D.

Bariatric surgery was pioneered in the United States in the 1950s to bring about weight loss in the morbidly obese. But in a high percentage of cases, many severely and generally obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery for weight loss also found that as a consequence, their Type 2 diabetes was either eliminated altogether or the symptoms drastically reduced.

Bariatric surgery to specifically cure Type 2 diabetes is not yet available in North America, even though it originated there. But it is available in Costa Rica, where several highly qualified medical practitioners at internationally-accredited full service hospitals perform this surgery to cure both obese and non-obese sufferers of T2D alike.

The surgical procedures used to cure obese people with Type 2 diabetes include the gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, lap-band and mini gastric bypass. A new technique, the duodenal exclusion, is designed for non-obese people. All have an 80-90% success rate.

Dr. Jacobo Zafrani specializes in Laparoscopic, General & Bariatric Surgery at Hospital Clínica Bíblica in San José, Costa Rica. Dr.  Zafrani has done several hundred surgeries to cure diabetes and obesity. His success rate of 90% is at the top of the curve, and according to him, none of his patients has had any complications.

Some T2D sufferers are not eligible at all. First there are preliminary consultations, and detailed medical information supplied by the patient. Psychological evaluation is also a factor. Only then will the Costa Rican surgeon such as Dr. Zafrani decide whether that person is a candidate for bariatric surgery, and which procedure is right for her or him.

The necessary pre-ops, hour-long surgery center to cure T2D; a one night stay at a modern, accredited Costa Rican hospital; and five-six subsequent days in a comfortable recovery center will cost about $10,000.00 USD, which most diabetes sufferers now spend in about 3-4 years simply to control the disease, not to eliminate it.

Thanks to bariatric surgery, diabetes sufferers can now look forward to living without painful daily blood tests; without spending thousands of dollars a year until the end of their days on expensive drugs, diets or other life-long medical therapies. A longer, happier, more fruitful life awaits them.

Many thousands of people already travel to Costa Rica for cosmetic and orthopedic surgery and dental care. That same option is now open to patients with Type 2 diabetes.

More information about this effective and safe surgical T2D cure is available from reputable medical tourism providers in Costa Rica such as Americana WellcareCR, which promotes this surgery on their website.

Donald MacGillivray

Eric De Ycaza from AWP interviewed Mr. Donald MacGillivray, from Ontario, Canada, who came to Panama for a Bariatric Surgery to be performed at Hospital Santa Fe. The surgery was scheduled for today July 20th, 2009, and the patient is ready and waiting for the surgery time.

Why among the Bariatric Surgeries, you chose the Sleeve surgery?
Ans. Is the most modern operation of the bariatric surgeries and, like I said, about the hormones? I’m confident that it’s the best one for the long term.

Why Panama? There’re many destinations around the region. Why particularly did you choose Panama?
Ans. Well – I don’t want to sound vague – The main alternative is Mexico and, for me MX is not a very attractive country to come for a surgery. I’ve come to Panama several times, I really like Pma., I like its people, I’ve had other work done here, so I’m very happy- ok.

You had various options here in Pma. You contacted us through the internet- Was there any particular reason why you chose AWP to be your partner through this process / experience?
Ans. Long sight! Every other place that I checked – every single one you’d come the day before the surgery, you have the surgery & in 2 or 3 days you’re gone! But.., but this Panama process, they check you very throughout and there are a lot of preparation and tests – it’s much safer! – It’s a more complicated process and in every other place, you come the day before the surgery and that’s it. There’re not many check ups and the process is quick, but in Panama they really make sure all the angles are covered.
They’re more complicated and more mature – they checked my respiration and that has to be a 100% before we go on… Like in other places, they don’t even check it, they say blood work and, ahh, just the EKG, that’s the other test, but right after that you go to surgery!

What’s your general opinion on the Doctors and facilities in Panama?
-Overall, the doctor & the hospital were great… very professionals.

Thanks for everything, I’m so glad that I spoke to you and found such a wonderful Bariatric Surgery treatment. If you need to visit this hospital then feel free here: 1.303.578.0719, info@placidway.com
