Twitter and Costa Rica – News, Events and Info

Twitter and Costa Rica

Twitter and Facebook has become a powerful tool in getting info on Costa Rica. So when they crashed yesterday, it exploded with concern.

When Twitter crashed and Facebook had problems yesterday, the Blogs exploded with it.  When Twitter finally came back online, the Tweets peppered the Social Media website of crying, bitching and blab blab blab.

So how does this effect Costa Rica?  It is pretty simple actually; the Tweets go to the profiles of the Twitter, who nonchalantly ask people to follow them. Their links they usually display in the Tweets hyped of  sharing information in Costa Rica. A new property listing in Jaco,  a Jazz concert in San Pedro, surf conditions at any particular break …  the Tweets are endless and suddenly that ALL vanished! Personally I thought that many had heart attacks about it!

And why? … well  the key to Twitter is the search and followers that send 10s of 1000s of hits to Costa Rica websites.  In a few keystrokes, one can get info on any particular area using Twitter search.  Twitter then becomes a powerful marketing tool than Blogs, other social media and newsletter email.

For example, if you are traveling to Jaco and wondering what is happening  like the current weather conditions or special events you would do a Twitter search Jaco, Costa Rica.

Suddenly your computer is filled with just about everything in Jaco. It is pretty impressive to say the lease and to those that depend on Twitter to deliver these messages to their followers and searchers.

Some even go as far as Twittering about confirming room reservation, the name of the driver who is picking you up at the airport, and a reminder, you need to make a 10% deposit for that river rafting trip.

Once you start providing “Good Tweets” and people start following you, you have a captured audience.  And for those websites  who hype their product and/or service the trick is then keeping them by posting Tweets that are relevant to your followers and help develop your brand and provide a mechanism to engage with your customer or prospective customers.

Recently our webmaster set up a Twitter RSS feed for hourly/daily Costa Rica Fishing Reports.  Sport fishing Captains now can email or call in their fish counts, boat name, weather conditions and parties.  F or those anglers traveling to Costa Rica they can get a up-to-date info on charting that marlin boat out of Golfito.

The problem with Twitter is people get so locked into this ego of having as many followers as possible which can turn against you!  Twitter ONLY becomes effective when you focus on followers that are relevant to you. If you have a Costa Rica Travel and Tourist website, you are better off getting followers that are travel and tourist related, then getting followers that either Tweets about how their dog puked all last night or someone selling BS e-books and investment plans.

At Tico Times Directory we try and be selective on whom we want to follow us. Obviously it is any site that deals and targets  Costa Rica. And why would we want followers who have 20,000 plus followers on their Twitter. The chance of our Tweet being read goes to almost  Zero.
