Costa Rica Bedbugs – No Press Pandemic or Infestation

Okay,  I have had enough! I received an interesting email (from a girl heading to Costa Rica) this morning, almost right after I read the Yahoo article (and several others) about NOW, the US Government fears an outbreak of Bed Bugs! She was  fricken worried if,  Bedbugs were infesting Costa Rica? Jezzes Christ, what is this paranoia world coming to now? One of the articles I read was from a … [Read more...]

Traveling To Costa Rica – Common Mistakes

I can not tell you how many times in Yahoo Answers, someone writes, 'Yeah I'm  going to Costa Rica ... only have  a few days ... What do I do ?' A year and a half ago I took my two 'very active boys' down, and got a hold of  friend, who puts together custom Costa Rica travel packages, and we enjoyed   a ball-busting trip of two days fishing, white water rafting, zip lining, volcano and hot … [Read more...]

First Swine Flu Death Reported in Costa Rica

Costa Rica's first death of the swine flu was that of a  53-year-old man on Saturday and as of now his town and name has been kept from the public.  As we posted last week  Whine Flu - Paris Hilton, hundreds of Costa Ricans (or should I say, hypochondriacs)   hush to hospitals in similar flu-like symptoms. I guess the government is being smart, not needing a PP (Pandemic Panic) as the culprit … [Read more...]

Driving to Costa Rica – Pan American Highway

Okay, so I have heard all the bad stories (carjackings, robberies and even murders) about driving from the US to Costa Rica. However, if you like the adventure (which it is a lifetime experience) it's an expensive (about 3-$5000) trip, and time consuming (about 3-4 weeks). It is not great idea for a couple of hot females or an elderly couple to do this. First the trip is long, the roads are often … [Read more...]

Costa Rica Swine Flu – Paris Hilton

When Paris Hilton was asked, "If she was afraid of contracting the Swine Flu (now called H1N1 among politicians and medical because the Pork Industry cried, discrimination), " her responds was something like this, “No, I don’t eat [pork] that.” Hummm … great thumb in the cheek answer Paris! Glad to see you keeping on top of world events.  Or is it, "You've learned to shrug at tabloid … [Read more...]

Swine Flu Hits Costa Rica – Health Warning

Well, you knew it was going to happen, and it did. Personally, I would have bet on Guatemala or Nicaragua claiming the first case. But Central America's Costa Rica confirmed its first case of swine flu in a 21-year-old Costa Rican woman who returned to San Jose from Mexico. Hours before the case was confirmed, assembly president Francisco Antonio Pacheco asked legislators to avoid handshake and … [Read more...]

Costa Rica Lifeguard Service

One of the questions I get asked all the time is, "How safe are Costa Rica's beaches?" And having been a competition swimmer, driver, surfer, and former lifeguard in San Diego, my answer is three questions, "How good of a swimmer are you?" and "Can you spot a rip current and  how to get out of one?" Since about the early eighties when US surfers discovered the unreal wave action in Costa Rica, … [Read more...]

Tipping and Gratuities – Costa Rica

Foreigners are told that hotels and restaurants add a percentage (usually 10%) into the bills to tip the employees, so there is no need to tip. Grant you that is true, but that percentage is suppose to get  dispersed in fair and equal percentage to all the employees, like the busboy, cook, kitchen help etc. However, the time it filters down to the poor little waitress, that ran her ass off to … [Read more...]

Cell Phones in Costa Rica. Renting, ICE and Coverage

Time and time again, I get questions about cell phones, whether or not US cell phones will work in Costa Rica. First, let’s make it very clear; Costa Rica is not like the US cell phone companies,  where there are a bunch of “competition.” Costa Rica has only one cell phone company, and it is a government run and operated monopoly, Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE). “Okay. No big … [Read more...]

Common Sense Travel – How Not to Get Robbed in Costa Rica

On a recent post in Yahoo Answers, one of the major contributor’s wrote;  He was not even in the country for 30 minutes when he got robbed in the parking lot. San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, and the hub of all travelers with San Jose Airport, has been having real problems with violent crime these days. You have to remember, it is a major city, and with that said, there are a lot of poor … [Read more...]

Costa Rica Custom Travel and Vacation Package

I usually do not like to hype a single travel agency in Costa Rica, because there are so many that provide excellent services, like the ones in our directory.  However, due to the increasing S & Ss (scammers and spammers)  bad trips I've read about on many chat rooms and blogs, I thought I’d write about one person that provides the Royals Royce treatment. If you want to be pampered, spend … [Read more...]

San Jose – Things to Do

Time and time again, people asked the question, "I got 2-3 days in San Jose, what can I do? " I know that San Jose does get a bad rap and is not the perfect town, but if  you can get away from the surfing, eco-tours and sportfishing, you will find yourself in a Latin culture that is full of arts and entertainment.  Shopping for furniture, jewelry, coffee (a best seller)  rum, leather goods, and … [Read more...]
