Acosta rica hookerlthough prostitution among adults is legal in Costa Rica, child prostitution  and sex with a child is punished to the most severe extent of the law and many tourist spots (including the airports) have warning signs up about it. And it is regularly and endlessly reported by the local press and television. It is also covered in the annual reports of the U. S. State Department regarding prostitution and the international trafficking of minors. ICE  will put someon on the 10 Most Wanted list if  accused of it.

Government statistics prove that the problem is prevalently domestic in origin, but regardless this has been ignored by foreign governments that have blacklisted Costa Rica as a haven for pedophiles.

However, the Costa Rica government deals harshly with those criminals they arrest. There are a large number of small establishments in San Jose catering to locals  and tourist seeking the services of  prostitutes.

A small number of hotels might be tolerant with guests bringing in prostitutes, but all are vigilant in protecting themselves and guests from entering with minors through verifying identification (such as checking of passports or national identification cards)

As you can see, Prostitution is perfectly legal in Costa Rica.  Theoretically, those individuals who have registered as prostitutes are suppose to be regularly examined by a doctor and carry ID cards. Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS) provides sex workers with a free exam every 15 days.  Not all go. Many of the ladies (and gentlemen) do not register.  Some that have do not get regularly examined, and quite frankly, it would make little difference as many of the more dangerous STD's (AIDS) may not show up for months on any test.  The bottom line, be real careful not only for the STDs, but also for getting ripped off.

While prostitution is legal in Costa Rica, procuring the prostitute or acting in any way as a go-between (pimping) is not.  Again, the reality is different.  As you walk through some areas of San José, there are offers made, usually by persons on the street. There are also a number of hotels that while being perfectly legitimate with clean rooms and nice facilities, have bar areas or other areas where you can find anywhere from 10-200 ladies waiting to be of service depending on the time of day.  One in particular has a really fine Sunday breakfast buffet.

Just about all of these hotels are pretty much centrally located in San José in areas that also have a large number of sports betting and gambling emporiums. A fair number of people come here not for the ladies, but more for the betting action, gambling and poker rooms and as we all know, gambling and sex go together like peanut butter and jelly.

There are also a ton of web sites promoting sex vacations, adult vacations, adult tours, escorted tours, exotic vacation, special tour guides.  These are simply businesses that hook up the prostitute and the client.  The government does little to control this, probably as it is not a very visible form of pimping and few folks are offended. Many of the gay resorts and travel agencies will provide a gay escort or know where you can get one.

Obviously, there are also escorted tours that are not involved with prostitution and there are legit Costa Rica dating services,  whose services are for those who want to date Costa Rica girls.

TicoTimes.com Editor’s Note: San Jose is the hub of all male and female  prostitution  and escort services in Costa Rica. There are 100s of bars, nightclubs, private clubs and restaurants that welcome the business that prostitution brings. Prostitutes will tip the management or doorman to let them in or provide a sex favor in return.  Many of the hotels bars allow it, as long as the hookers do not openly (not hassle) solicit their business. What this means is that they have to be approached by someone (either male or female or couple) who wants sex or the prostitute will casually asked if that person wants some company or date or the typical  macho line, "Can I buy you a drink?"  or " Do you want to dance?" will start the deal.

Couples who like the wildside (swingers, threesomes etc) are in a candy house  of sexual excitement.  And just about all the escort services provide services to gay and lesbian, so it is best to contact the service and find out what they do provide.

It is pretty much accepted as a way of life and is wide spread in Costa Rica unless the owners of the establishment posts out front or have on their website that they do not allow such behavior, especially if the establishment is family orientated.

It does not matter if you are in the Pacific coast tourist packed fishing and surfing town of Jaco, to the small fishing community of Golfito (Southern end on the Pacific coast), or the Caribbean's port city of Limon, or at some off-the-beaten path bar in the Northern Plains, prostitution is wide spread and it caters to all forms of sexual enjoyments. Payments of these services range from $10 US (quicky) to $500 US (all-day) - it all depends on what the person(s) wants and needs are.  Some of the high-class escort services provide limo services, travel arrangements, and day tours to private beaches with the escort of your choice that can be arranged online and payment via credit card.

Prostitutes DO NOT go to any doctors. ID cards are just to verify they are over 18 and have nothing to do with their occupation. Many prostitutes from the Dominican Republic have HEP C in addition to numerous STDs you would expect. Remember that the prostitutes you meet in Costa Rica are from places you would never consider going, are involved in gangs and frequently rob, blackmail and even kill their customers. Have fun. I have lived in Jaco for 6 years and traveled to Costa Rica since 1993 and was VERY involved in the sex industry. I personally knew two gringos killed by hookers and so many that have been robbed and screwed with it would make you sick.

The massage parlours (like new fantasy) are terrible for picking up STDs. If you go there keep in mind that the girls are with anywhere from 10-15 guys a day every day expect when they have their periods. Their portion of your payment is anywhere from $10 for a half hour to a max of $20 for a full hour, so many of the girls make extra money by offering other services like BBBJ or Anal without condom. These other activities put the girl at risk of getting an STD. Plus condoms break at least once a week and you never know what that guy left behind. Beware of the massage parlour meat markets.
